There’s a certain magic in the desert at dawn. The air is crisp, carrying the faint scent of creosote from the night’s cool stillness. The sky, painted in hues of pink and gold, signals the start of a new day, and for me, it’s the perfect time to venture into McKelligon Canyon.

As the light of day begins to break through the mountains, I head out to hike McKelligon Canyon, letting my breath sync with the rhythm of my steps. The climb isn’t just about reaching a destination, it’s a moving meditation, a way to connect with the land before I begin my work. At a quiet spot overlooking the canyon, I take a few moments for sunrise yoga. The desert, with all its rugged beauty, mirrors the balance I seek, strength and softness, stillness and movement, solitude and connection.

Why Harvest at Sunrise 

Once the sun crests the horizon, it’s time to harvest. Sunrise is the ideal time to gather desert botanicals, especially creosote, when the medicinal potency is at its peak. The essential oils are most concentrated in the cool morning hours, before the desert heat diffuses them into the air. With deep reverence, I clip sprigs of this ancient plant, mindful to take only what is needed and never from the same bush twice. I pause to inhale its unmistakable scent, the essence of rain, earth, and time itself.
